Stay in Line is a minimalist monoprint made from vintage letterpress type—an image built from language, repetition, and restraint.
A dense rectangular field of deep green impressions fills the paper like a compacted grid or coded document. Hundreds of type pieces align into vertical columns, creating the feeling of order imposed: narrow blocks stacked tightly, like rules, ranks, or routines. The rhythm is strict, almost bureaucratic—yet the surface is imperfect. Slight shifts, gaps, and uneven edges reveal the physical reality of the process: pressure, ink, and handmade variation pressing against the demand for uniformity.
The title Stay in Line casts the composition as both instruction and warning. It suggests obedience, conformity, and the quiet tension of being kept within boundaries. What was once functional type—designed to communicate clearly—becomes an abstract system, where meaning is replaced by structure and control.
The result is spare, graphic, and psychologically charged: a portrait of discipline, compression, and the fragile humanity inside rigid order.
